Man sentenced to life in prison for Topeka officer’s death

A man who gunned down a Topeka police officer last year will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Ross Preston Lane was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole for the September 2014 death of 40-year-old Cpl. Jason Harwood. Lane pleaded guilty in July to capital murder.

Harwood was shot three times after stopping Lane’s car for speeding. The officer was wearing a bulletproof vest but was hit in the neck and abdomen.

Harwood stopped Lane’s car for speeding. Witnesses said Lane said he wasn’t going back to prison before he opened fire as the officer approached the car.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports about 50 law enforcement officers packed the courtroom during Lane’s sentencing, as Harwood’s family and friends discussed the impact of his death.
