Man Nearly Drowns in Backyard Pool

KSAL Staff - July 14, 2015 10:19 am

Some Kansas pools and water parks are closing their water slides in response to a new state law that tightened regulations on amusement park rides.

A man nearly drowned in a backyard pool in rural Saline County Monday evening.

According to Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski, 39-year-old Matthew Upshaw and his 18-year-old son Zachary were cleaning their pool in their backyard at 873 E. Frisbie Way at around 6:00 in the evening.

The Sheriff says that Matthew went inside the house. When he came back out a few minutes later, Zachary was floating face down in the pool, not breathing.

Matthew pulled Zachary out of the pool, and started CPR. When first responders arrived, Zachary was breathing.

Zachary was transported by EMS to the hospital in Salina, where he was admitted overnight for observation. More Specific details on his condition were not immediately available.

The sheriff says that an investigation into exactly how Zachary ended up in the pool is continuing.
