Man Killed In Trench Collapse

A 30-year-old city of Manhattan worker has died in a trench collapse.

The Riley County Police Department said in a news release that William Albert Wiske of Wamego was repairing a water main Friday evening when the trench gave way.

The Manhattan Mercury reports that Wiske was buried up to his waist in dirt and mud when emergency crews arrived. He was freed in about 20 minutes and rushed to a Manhattan hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

City Manager Ron Fehr said in a statement that the city was “deeply saddened.”
