Authorities say multiple people may have been involved in the deadly shootings of three people in rural central Kansas.
What began with a traffic stop in Hays ended with one person being shot and killed by a police officer after a pursuit.
According to the Ellis County Attorney’s Office, at 2:33 in the afternoon a Hays Police Officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic infraction. When the driver did not obey commands from the officer, backup was requested.
As other officers began to arrive, the stopped vehicle sped off. A high speed pursuit ensued, that lasted several minutes.
The vehicle eventually stopped, and the driver got out. The situation escalated when the driver did not follow verbal commands.
At 2:41 one shot was fired by an officer, striking the driver. The driver, a 36-year-old male whose name was not immediately released, was killed.
The shooting is under investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Ellis County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ellis County Coroner.
