Man Arrested after Fight with 5 Officers

A shirtless man who was high on meth and swinging a metal bar was taken into custody after fighting with officers on Country Club Road Monday afternoon.

Deputies with the Saline County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32-year-old Manuel Zapien, Jr. from Turon, Kansas after he was tased, handcuffed and sedated by EMS near the Scoular Elevator located at 3339 E. Country Club Road.

According to Undersheriff Brent Melander, deputies were called around 12:20pm to investigate a shirtless man who was trying to steal tools from a construction site.

Melander says Zapien was incoherent, babbling and would not obey commands from deputies and KHP troopers who he then fought with as they tased him twice and finally tackled him into custody.

Authorities found a meth pipe in Zapien’s pocket and he was taken to Salina Regional Health Center for observation and treatment for excited delirium. He is now facing multiple charges for battery of a law enforcement officer, possession of a narcotic and paraphernalia.

Two deputies were also taken to the hospital after the fracas.

Deputy Eric Appel was treated and released with a hand injury and Deputy Chad Flesher was also taken to be checked out.
