Lawmaker’s Remarks Investigated

Six Kansas legislators are reviewing a complaint against a Democratic lawmaker over her remarks during a committee meeting.

The three Republicans and three Democrats were having their first meeting Wednesday.

House rules required the committee’s appointment once the complaint against Democratic Rep. Valdenia Winn of Kansas City was filed by nine GOP lawmakers.

The committee could recommend potential sanctions for the House to consider.

The complaint concerns comments Winn made during a House Education Committee meeting March 19.

Winn criticized a bill to repeal a law giving a tuition break at public universities and colleges to young students living in the U.S. illegally. Winn is black and called the proposal racist.

Two of the complaining lawmakers also are black.

Winn didn’t return telephone messages seeking comment Tuesday evening.
