Kansas Turnpike Authority to Tackle Flooding Risk

Associated Press - September 3, 2015 2:10 pm

Kansas Turnpike Authority officials say they are keeping a close eye on traffic between Kansas City and Lawrence out of concern that the recently completed South Lawrence Trafficway could take revenue away from the Turnpike.

The Kansas Turnpike Authority has announced additional plans aimed at preventing flash flooding along a stretch of the toll road.

The Wichita Eagle reports the KTA on Tuesday announced it will do more than originally planned to enhance safety on a two-mile stretch where seven people have died in flash flooding since 2003. The area is south of Emporia.

KTA says the design intended to keep water off the roadway during 100-year storms is expected to be done in 2016. A 100-year storm is one with a 1 percent chance of happening in any year.

KTA will also install a stream monitor at a location where a 21-year-old man died when his car ran into about 10 inches of floodwater. KTA says the monitor will be operating around mid-September.
