Kansas Town Hopes to Heat Up

MAPLETON, Kan. (AP) – A small community in Kansas that lost its natural gas service earlier this year hopes a federal grant to update their heating systems will come before temperatures drop this winter.

Kansas Public Radio reports that the grant would pay for the city of Mapleton to convert homes to propane heat. It was awarded to the city of Mapleton on June 1, but the conversion hasn’t happened so far.

Kansas Commerce Department spokesman Matt Keith said the process is taking a normal amount of time. He said city and grant administrators “are working as quickly as possible” to get the work completed while still meeting the grant’s requirements, including an environmental review and bids from contractors.
