Kansas Senate confirmation votes expected Wednesday

Kansas Senate confirmation votes expected Wednesday

Majority Leader Terry Bruce says he expects the Kansas Senate to vote Wednesday on confirming three state Board of Regents members and other appointments by Gov. Sam Brownback.

The Legislature is convening a special session Tuesday to rewrite a state law that allows convicted murderers to be sentenced to at least 50 years in prison. But the Senate is legally obligated to consider pending appointments.

Bruce says committees will consider appointments Tuesday so the full Senate can vote on all of them Wednesday.

The appointees include new regents Shane Bangerter of Dodge City, Helen Van Etten of Topeka and Ann Murguia of Kansas City, Kan.

Also facing confirmation votes are Secretary of Administration Jim Clark and Securities Commissioner Josh Ney.

Ann Murguia? The sister of Janet, President and CEO of the National Council of La Raza, sister of Mary the one who took on Sherrif Joe Arpaio of tent city fame in Maricopa Co, AZ as US District Court judge for Arizona and appointed 89-0 in the senate as a judge on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, brother of Carlos, the first Hispanic judge to sit for the US District Court for Kansas, and brother of Ramon, lawyer in Kansas City who graduated from Harvard Law? Fascinating family and fascinating pick by Brownback of an entrenched Democrat.

Their mother was born in Mexico and did not speak English. More Hispanics need to learn about this family since they grew up in Kansas. Fascinating family that has worked hard for Hispanic rights, I just wish more people knew about them.
