A Kansas man will be allowed to wear a turtleneck to cover mirror-image letters spelling out the word “murder” on his neck during his first-degree murder trial.

Lisa Taylor of the Kansas Office of Judicial Administration says attorneys agreed last week to allow Jeffrey Wade Chapman, formerly of Pawnee Rock, during his trial in the November 2011 killing of Damon Galliart, whose body was found by hunters southwest of Great Bend.

Chapman’s attorney had asked that a tattoo artist be allowed to remove or cover the tattoo because it could be prejudicial. But prosecutors said Kansas law does not allow tattoo artists to practice in jails.

The Great Bend Tribune reports the trial has been delayed to Aug. 18. Chapman’s attorney is seeking a change of venue.
