A vote in the Kansas House appears to have saved a state requirement for utilities to rely on wind and other renewable resources to generate some of their electricity.

On a 63-60 vote Friday, the House blocked debate on a bill repealing the mandate for utilities to have renewable resources cover 20 percent of their peak generating capacities by 2020.

Supporters of the bill said the issue is dead for the year but promised to push again next year.

Under the measure before the House, renewable resources still would have had to cover 15 percent of utilities’ generating capacities, but that requirement would have disappeared in 2020.

Environmentalists fought the proposal. It had the backing of the Kansas Chamber of Commerce and the conservative group Americans for Prosperity.
