Informational Meeting About New Bicycle Lanes

KSAL Staff - September 21, 2015 3:22 pm

The Sharrow icon designates that cars and bikes share the lane

The public has a chance this week to learn a little more about the new bicycle lanes that are appearing around Salina.

On Wednesday there will be a public discussion about the new bicycle lanes. Salina City Manager Jason Gage, along with representatives from the Salina Bicycle Advocacy Group will be at the event.

Gage joined in on the KSAL Morning News earlier this month with a look at how the process is going, “Once we get kind of over the hump on the education and people get used to it after a few months I think we’ll be fine,” he said.

About seven months ago city commissioners approved a master plan to identify bike routes with stripes and bike icons as streets are overlaid with a fresh coat of micro-surfacing.

Gage said overall the feedback from the public has been pretty positive, and that the Sharrow icon is causing more questions than concerns, “I think the biggest frustration is that a lot of the motorist believe that the Sharrow allows a bicycle to ride in front of the car and slow them down,” Gage said.

“That is not the intent.”

Gage added that crews will continue to phase in more Bike Lanes and Sharrows as road projects progress.

The information meeting this week will take place Wednesday evening at Access TV of Salina, 215 N. 9th. It begins at 7:00 and is open to the public.

The 98 percent of the taxpayers should show up and let Gage know we are not happy with him or the city commissioners spending taxpayer monies on this. If I did not know better I would believe Gage and Price are brothers.
