“Georgetown Santas” Suiting Up This Weekend

Salina’s “Georgetown Santas” will be out this weekend.

The group of five neighbors have become a popular mainstay in Salina in the days leading up to Christmas each year. Each year the Santa suit up on Georgetown Road in East Salina, handing out candy and popcorn and spreading Christmas cheer.

The tradition began back in 1998, when Jack Schmiedeler moved to Georgetown Road. He noticed a lot of traffic at Christmas from sightseers looking at the lights. He bought a Santa suit, stood outside, waved and gave away candy.

His neighbor from across the street, Paul McDaniel, asked if he could join in the fun. Other neighbors including Pete Martin, Mike Chaput, and Mel Augustine joined in the effort. Also joing in as Santa’s helpers were Justin Martin, Virgil Michaelis, and Larry Thompson. They began handing out freshly-popped popcorn in addition to the candy.

The Georgetown Santas will be out this year beginning this weekend. They will be out nightly beginning Saturday, each night through Christmas Eve, 6:30pm – 9:00pm. They will be handing out popcorn and candy through December 23rd, and candy only on December 24th.

The story on this is not exactly correct. Also none of these houses were never decorated to the standards of award winning homes elsewhere. Just a bunch of rich guys with to much time on their hands. With the current crime spree going on this should attract some attention from the crooks this year.

You would think these guys would do more to give back to the community.

Wow are you 2 ^^^^serious. Happy Holidays Salina. LOL Go on out and enjoy the great job these Santas do for the community. I recently moved to Wichita and am thinking of bringing the family back one night just to drive through and see the GT Santas. Love Miss T

I bet you would pass by or over look a whole bunch of better decorated homes between wichita and salina. Maybe no free popcorn or candy but that should not be the draw anyways.
