Fire guts abandoned Topeka church

A fire has destroyed an abandoned church in Topeka.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the fire at the old Harrison Street Church was reported Sunday morning. No injuries were reported.

By the time the first crews arrived at the two-alarm fire, flames were shooting out the east side of the building and heavy, black smoke was rolling out of the roof.

Ten fire companies responded to the blaze, which was brought under control by midmorning. Only a shell of the century-old structure remained after the fire. A couple nearby homes also sustained very minor damage from the fire.

A Topeka fire investigator was on the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
