DUI, Reckless Driving

A short high-speed pursuit ends with a DUI arrest.

Salina Police arrested 28-year-old Rodney Ponton early Thursday morning after he allegedly led officers on a chase that reached speeds of 70 mph near downtown and ended with a crash at Ohio and Riverside.

Captain Mike Sweeney tells KSAL News that an officer on patrol noticed a vehicle with its lights off and attempted to stop the 2001 Ford Escape in the 100 block of S. 7th around 2:05am.

Police say Ponton lost control of the SUV while trying to make a turn onto Ohio from Elm, hit a crosswalk sign and popped a tire on a curb before he and an unknown passenger jumped out and ran.

Ponton was caught after the foot chase and is now facing multiple charges that could include DUI, flee and elude and reckless driving.
