Drowsy Driver Kills Abilene Woman

A driver falls asleep and hits and kills a pedestrian near a disabled vehicle on the shoulder of Interstate 70.  

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a vehicle with a flat tire was parked on the north shoulder of the interstate. The driver had exited the vehicle and was standing in the ditch next to it.

Troopers say that as another vehicle approached, the person driving it fell asleep. It drifted off the road into the ditch. 

The pedestrian was hit and killed. The pedestrian is identified as 31-year-old Samantha A. Coleman of Abilene. The driver who hit her is identified as 38-year-old Daniel N. Nitchman of St. Robert, Missouri.

The crash happened at 4:23 Sunday afternoon at milepost 321 in Riley County seven miles East of the I-70/ K-177 junction.
