Dickinson County Town Disbanding Police Department

KSAL Staff - February 4, 2015 3:33 pm

A Dickinson County Community is getting rid of its police department. The Enterprise City Council voted this week to discontinue its small police department, and instead contract with the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement. The department consisted of an interim chief and two officers.

Enterprise Mayor Larry Jantz tells KSAL News that final details are still being worked out.

Enterprise is a community of 950, located east of Abilene, 3 miles south of Interstate 70 on Kansas Highway 43. Enterprise is the home of the first public school kindergarten in the state of Kansas. In January of 1901 Enterprise was visited by female temperance leader Carry Nation when she smashed a local saloon.

Enterprise joins other Dickinson County communities including the city of Solomon and the city of Hope in contracting with the sheriff’s office for law enforcement.

Many citizens here including myself are not happy about this decision – that was made by individuals that are supposed to be representing us.

You are so right. They had a super police chief in Bettles for many years until politics got involved with some that still think they run the town. Since that time they have had run of the mill people in the chief’s seat that let’s say were not up to par with what they had. The sheriff’s office is spread to thin the way it is and nobody in any of these places can expect a good response time if they need someone. My suggestion people is to arm yourselves to protect yourself and your loved ones because the crooks are reading this as well and will be targeting you folks. Its probably time for the 950 people in the community to clean house of those in charge and get back on track.

Try having your home entered at 3 a.m. by 2 people who steal your tv and after being told they needed to leave by 2 people who were in the house and terrified. They called the enterprise police department and it went to the sheriff’s dispatch who told them they had no jurisdiction in enterprise and would have to wait until the local police came on duty the next afternoon. It took them 3 weeks to get a warrant for her arrest and before they got it she had entered the same home again and stolen over a thousand dollars worth of stuff that that charges still haven’t been filed for since November 22. Bettles was the last good chief they had. Officer Paige was good to she just didn’t have enough time with her other job.
