Dickinson County authorities say a 5-year-old girl has died in a farming accident.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office identifies the girl as Brooklyn Debenham of rural Abilene.

Sheriff Gareth Hoffman says that emergency responders were called to a soybean field in northern Dickinson County on Wednesday evening. He says the child had been riding in the cab of the combine with her father when the combine hit a bump or some obstacle. The combine’s windshield shattered, and the child fell through the glass and landed on the machine’s header.

Hoffman says the child died in the field.

The sheriff tells KSAL News that the community of Abilene is taking the news hard. He says “you can feel it in the air. Heads are certainly down”.

I grew up on the farm and remember the farm accident that took our friend and neighbor away from his family of eight children. A farm families nightmare. Tragic. Heartbreaking. My sympathies to the Debenham family.

I grew up on the farm running the same type of machine that was involved in the accident. I can remember dumping a wheel in a wash out and what kind of an impact that had as the driver. Things happen so suddenly. When I read this on FB, I immediately cried because this could have been me or my family. My heart breaks for this family. My hope is that they will find peace in the Lord in their time of need. Lord please comfort this family in every aspect. Use family and friends to help comfort them in their time of need. I couldn’t imagine nor would I. God Bless you all who are involved and all who knows this family. We are a small community please pull together for them!!!
