The Abilene Cowboys moved to (2-0) on the season with a 14-12 victory over the Marysville Bulldogs Friday night, in what was the NCKL opener for both teams and the home opener for Abilene.
The defenses dominated the game as Abilene managed only 118 yards, while the Bulldogs totaled up 262 yards unofficially.
Marysville scored the only points of the first half on a 51 yard pass play from quarterback Jack Blummer to Jayton Haggard to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead going into the locker room.
The Cowboys would use their defense to get back into the game as they recovered a fumble at the Marysville 8 yard line with 4:09 to play in the third and score two plays later with a Parker O’Neal 1 yard touchdown run. Kicker Hunter Sprouse turned a botched extra point attempt into a two point conversion as he found Parker Base in the end zone to give Abilene their first lead at 8-6 with 3:31 to play in quarter three.
Marysville would turn it over for a third time on a fake punt attempt with 7:14 to play as Blummer’s pass was intercepted by Michael Anguiano and returned to the three yard line. Parker O’Neal would once again score two plays later to give Abilene a 14-6 lead with 6:38 to go. The extra point try failed.
The Bulldogs would make it interesting as they scored on a Blummer to Hunter Warnick 16 yard pass play to make it 14-12 with 2:59 left. The conversion try would fail and Abilene would hold on for the victory.
With the win Abilene won their 13th straight league game and their 8th straight against Marysville. Next week the Cowboys host Andover Central in a rematch from last year’s playoffs. Abilene lost 35-34 at Andover Central in the quarter finals last season.
