Car Thief Caught

The driver of a stolen truck was taken into custody after a chase through Salina early Wednesday.

Saline County Sheriff-elect Roger Soldan tells KSAL News that a deputy identified a Toyota truck that was reported stolen and attempted to make a traffic stop in the 600 block of E. Pacific at 12:30am.

The driver took off reaching speeds of 95 mph as he headed over the viaduct southbound on N. Ohio.

Deputies called off the chase near Oakdale Park for safety concerns as the driver continued to drive in a reckless manner at 70 mph.

A short time later, Salina Police officers picked up the pursuit after the truck was spotted in the 1600 block of Iron Avenue.

Officers arrested 48-year-old Jose Perez of Salina after he ran through a front yard in the 100 block of S. Wisconsin and disabled the vehicle. Perez is facing multiple charges for traffic violations and is also charged with the theft of gasoline from Casey’s at 2404 S. 9th.

Police also allegedly found meth in his backpack and he will be charged with possession of a stimulant.

Police say Perez stole the 1999Toyota Tacoma from a home in the 200 block of S. 11th sometime between Monday evening at 7pm and 9:10pm on Tuesday.
