Arrest Made After Woman Escapes Basement Ordeal

A woman escapes from her home to call for help after a domestic dispute turned violent in central Salina.

Captain Mike Sweeney tells KSAL News that the 3-hour ordeal began Saturday around 5pm, when her assailant accused her of having an affair, “She was held in a basement by a known individual for several hours,” he said.

The victim told officers the man pulled a knife out at one point and told her, “you are going to die tonight.”

Captain Sweeney added, “While being held she was sexually assaulted and strangled.”

Police arrested 29-year-old David Summers of Salina on Saturday night on multiple charges that include attempted 2nd degree murder, rape and child endangerment.

The woman’s four children who are all under the age of 10, were present in the home, but were not physically injured and remain in the care of their mother.

The woman was able to escape from her basement when a 20-year-old man knocked on the front door. Police say Summers left her behind to head butt the man and push him back through the door. He had a cut under his left eye.

The victim, a female in her 30’s was treated and released from the hospital.
