3 Hurt In Crash Involving Military Vehicle

A crash on Interstate 70 east of Salina on Tuesday morning involving a military convoy vehicle and a small civilian SUV sent three people to the hospital.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol,  a 2011  Chevrolet Equinox was following a military vehicle. The driver of the SUV, 29-year-old Monica Westendorf of Abilene,  was distracted by her phone. The SUV rear ended the military vehicle .

The SUV struck a guardrail and came to rest. The military vehicle came to rest in the north ditch.

Westendorf and a 6-year-old passenger were both injured, and transported to the hospital in Salina.  A passenger in the military vehicle, 34-year-old Jacob Knight from Oklahoma, was also injured and transported to the hospital in Salina.

The patrol says that everyone involved in the crash was buckled up.

The crash happened at 8:40 Tuesday morning, 10 miles east of Salina on I 70.
